"I have chosen to photograph nature because I greatly love and respect nature, because to me every creature is beautiful, everything natural has a story, and every area and living thing man has not touched and had no part in creating is just a little more mysterious and awe inspiring than the rest of the world I know. My goal as a nature photographer is to capture the beauty and essence of the natural world, to share its wonder and mystery with others." ~ Kari Post

About the Photographer

My passion for nature and photography both developed when I was fairly young.  As a kid, I loved playing outside: splashing in puddles, collecting seashells, climbing trees, and catching fireflies.  My mom took me on trips to the zoo and the local duck pond, where I photographed the animals using her old Kodak point-and-shoot camera, a minimalist fixed focal length model that broke on a regular basis and was repaired by my dad just as regularly.

I grew up in the crowded suburbs of northeastern New Jersey, not exactly a mecca for outdoor pursuits or nature photography, but nonetheless, I somehow grew up to be a nature crazy, adventure loving, thrill seeking, save the planet, spread the love photographer-environmentalist-humanitarian type of adult.  Since graduating from The College of New Jersey with my Bachelor’s degree in Health and Exercise Science Teaching in 2008, I started working in the field of outdoor education and haven’t looked back.  I regularly volunteer and work for a handful of nonprofit organizations running environmental and adventure programs for children, young adults, and old adults with young hearts, doing everything from carving pumpkins and decorating Easter eggs to leading week long backcountry backpacking and canoe trips.  In my spare time, I pretty much like to do the same thing and enjoy running, biking, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, horseback riding, and other sports and outdoor pursuits.  I love to travel and explore, and I’m always up for a good adventure.  In 2009, I biked across the United States, living on the road for 109 days while cycling from Virginia to Oregon.

Photography for me is a way to share with others all of the exciting and beautiful things I find while outdoors in nature.  I’m a person fueled by passion, and it’s my love for the natural world that inspires me to photograph it.  Sometimes I’m too busy exploring, and go weeks without taking a single picture, and other times I have my camera glued to me and shoot everything I see.  I feel that photography can be a profound educational tool, and I view my images as a way to not only show others all the beauty and wonder of the natural world, but to inspire them to love it, value it, and protect it.  I hope that my photographs can be used to aid conservation efforts, raise awareness about environmental issues, and to encourage others to take a closer look at the impact we have on our fragile planet.

This summer, I will be leading trips throughout West Virginia, New York, New Hampshire, and Maine then moving to New Hampshire in the fall to start a Master's program in Environmental Education at Antioch University of New England. I hope to use my experiences leading trips and background in adventure education, photography, and environmental studies to develop new programs to further educate children and adults alike about the environment and our role in preserving its beauty and resources for future generations.

This is my friend Dave and I in the Sisters Wilderness of Oregon. We biked 4000 miles across the United States together in 2009, when this photo was taken. Hobbies of mine include, when bored, taking self portraits of me making ridiculous faces. This one is from the webcam on my laptop in June 2010. Fellow photographer Chris Kayler shot this picture of me photographing deer in Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park in 2006, the year I started getting seriously into nature photography. I love kids! The best job I ever had was working for a New Jersey based non-profit called Project USE. Here some coworkers and I grabbed a shot with a 5th grade class while on a scavenger hunt in Newark as part of our staff development in 2008. I started horseback riding when I was eight. This is me on my cousins' Appaloosa gelding Dawson in 2006. I love swimming and waterfalls and boats and anything having to do with water, and worked as a lifeguard throughout high school and college.
